Playwright for the Origins Project
City Lights Youth Theatre, a non-profit theatre arts organization, is seeking a Playwright to work collaboratively with 15 students and a director during the summer of 2006 on our Origins Project. The Origins Project, in partnership with the New-York Historical Society, is an innovative summer program that offers New York City teens the unique opportunity to work with a professional playwright and a professional director to create and perform a new theatrical work. Utilizing primary research material from the New-York Historical Society, first-hand interviews, and site-visits, students integrate personal experiences with those seated in the historical past, and are able to bring history to life using the magic of live theatre.
Responsibilities:
The playwright will work two days a week with the students, leading activities to encourage responses from the outings, and working with students to elicit written material for the script. The other three days will be spent researching the historical events to be discussed and devising a show based on the original material produced by the students. The playwright will need to occasionally consult with the Artistic and Education Directors at City Lights to ensure that the script mirrors the guidelines established for the Origins Project. An assistant is provided for the playwright.
Qualifications:
-Must have at least 2 years experience working with/teaching students ages 5 and up
-Must submit a writing sample
-B.A/M.A Preferred
Dates:
The Origins Project runs from Monday Friday, 10:00 am 4:00 pm starting Wednesday, July 5th, and ending in final performances, Friday August 11th, and Saturday, August 12, 2006.
