Willows Theatre Company seeks scripts
We are committed to live theatre as an art form and to the development of new works. We have largely a suburban audience whose sensibilities and tastes have been developed over a number of years of continued attendance. The audience is loyal, faithful and trusting in our sense of adventure and good taste.
Typically, The Willows Theatre Company produces at least one world premiere (or second production) in each season. Likewise, we produce many West Coast or Northern California premieres. We produce exclusively from contemporary American Theatre but will consider certain stylized plays and musicals which have a contemporary edge to them.
How to apply:
1. The annual submission period is April 1 - June 1. (You may send unsolicited scripts during this period.)
2. During the remainder of the year, send a brief synopsis, character breakdown, cassette tape or demo tape (for musicals) and an SASE for its return.
3. Send full script ONLY if invited by the theatre. Include a SASP to notify you of its arrival.
4. Allow at least three months before expecting a response.
The Willows Theatre Company does not accept one-acts. We like plays and musicals that tell a great story. Our cast sizes vary but we are not daunted by large casts. If you look at our production history, we typically will have 15 or more in each production. However, because of the limitation of our orchestra pit (and I use the term loosely) we have been successfully using Cubase digital music for accompanying musicals. This allows our musical director to program a large orchestral sound without a large orchestra. We have a sophisticated sound system which does a tremendous job in this area. But, if the show is a combo style accompaniment, we will hire up to 5 live musicians. Our theatre, the Willows Theatre is a 20' X 40' modified proscenium theatre with no flys (18' to the grid) and limited 8' wings.
We compensate all of our performers and operate under a LORT-LOA contract with AEA. We are members of TCG, the Institute for Outdoor Drama, Theatre Bay Area, and the National Alliance of Musical Theatre.
