(emailed and posted to the message board)
See what you miss when you don't come to the meetings?
The production wing of En Avant is going to mount a program of short plays (of the 10-15 minute variety); the date we're shooting for is mid-June, and the venue one of Hunter College's 4 theaters.
The enrolled folk (David M. in particular) are going to see which of these spaces we can use: the Loewe Theater (the one off the courtyard at 68th & Lex) is the best venue, but is hard to get; then there's the black box studio space on the fifth floor of Hunter North, and two other spaces we are checking out.
In addition to just getting the space, we're investigating whether there are any funds available at Hunter to underwrite the program, which would be a full production, with actors, NOT a reading, and run for 4-5 performances.
The idea is that we should each pick our best short play as a "calling card". The goal is to present a short run of plays done at a professional level.
David, Ed and I have all chosen short works we'd like to see done, and my next assignment is to spread the word among the other people in the group to see if 1) you have a piece you'd like produced; 2) what part you could play in helping get this off the ground.
In fact, even if everyone in the group submits a piece, it is still doable in one evening. Even if you don't want to put in anything for this program, please consider being involved in some other way (acting, directing, design).
In terms of connections and resources, so far it looks as though we can get a space rent-free; if we can get any funding from Hunter, we can use it for a designer and/or tech director. Once we have everyone's play in, we will set up an open call for actors (and find the right directors for each piece); and throughout, each of us will assume some task or tasks that will get us to opening night, ranging from acting, directing, stage managing or finding a stage manager; and all the other minutiae involved in putting together a decent showcase.
The production will be AT Hunter, but not necessarily OF Hunter: we can and will audition people in the
program and consider them for all the positions, but they will also be auditioning with anyone we choose to bring in.
So if you weren't at the meeting today, PLEASE respond via email, and via posting in the new area of the message board I've created, whether you'd like to participate, what play you'd like done (or if you need help deciding!), and a breakdown of the characters/setting.
And, can you do it by this coming Friday, March 27?
Thanks!
Kathleen
