Pride Films & Plays is excited to announce that submissions for the 2017 LezPlay Contest are now open.
The mission of the contest is to enhance the visibility and advance the viability of Sapphic-centered stories for the stage. To that end, LezPlay honors excellence in storytelling by women-identified writers who present lesbian characters and themes—past, present, and future—in a pivotal, positive way.
The LezPlay Contest is open to playwrights who identify as women.
We want stories that elevate and celebrate us, refine and redefine us. We want to introduce audiences to writers whose work reflects, resonates with, and is relevant to their lives. We want stories that have a broad appeal, stories that will enable us to reach individuals of all ages and in all stages of life.
From April 1 to May 31, 2017, we welcome submissions of full-length plays (up to 120 pages) from writers who identify as women. Only scripts that have not been professionally produced are eligible. Scripts that have been submitted in the past are eligible for resubmission only once and only if the script has been radically revised.
We are seeking scripts from women of all stripes and types. Regardless of how you identify as a woman, and even if your identity is not queer-cut, if your play shares a story in which lesbian characters and themes stand out, please send us your work and lez play.
Scripts will be judged by a panel of theatre professionals: directors, artistic directors, playwrights, producers, dramaturges, literary managers.
One winner and two finalists will be selected from all script entries. The selected scripts will be those that receive the highest recommendation from our reading panel and that best align with the mission of LezPlay. The two finalists will receive a prize of $300. The winner will earn a prize of $400 and four days of developmental workshops, culminating in two public staged readings on September 8 and 9 at Pride Arts Center in Chicago.
To enter LezPlay, complete the online entry form at FilmFreeway. Please submit your script as a PDF with NO identifying information (only blind copies will be accepted).
Entry fee is $15 if script is received by April 30. Entry fee is $30 if script is received by May 31. Members of the Dramatists Guild and PFP's Writers Network are invited to submit one (1) entry for free. To make the final deadline, scripts must be received by 11:59 pm Central Time on May 31, 2017.
